KVM Host S.M.A.R.T
The S.M.A.R.T system is used in almost all disks today, and is in many cases able to report that a a disk is about to fail. Using the S.M.A.R.T features we can make sure that we replace the faulty hardware before it becomes a real problem.
Install the smartmontools package.
# apt-get install smartmontools
Edit /etc/smartd.conf and comment the DEVICESCAN line.
#DEVICESCAN -d removable -n standby -m root -M exec /usr/share/smartmontools/smartd-runner
Add the following to the end of the file
/dev/sdc -d ata -l error -l xerror -l selftest -s L/../../4/04 -m root -M daily -f /dev/sdd -d ata -l error -l xerror -l selftest -s L/../../4/04 -m root -M daily -f
Restart the smartd service.
# service smartd restart
